Jeff Gordon is favored to pick up his first win of the 2008 Sprint Cup Series season at the Toyota SaveMart 350 this weekend.
The 10-turn, 1.99-mile road course at Infineon Raceway in Sonoma, California is expected to be a major challenge for drivers who are used to NASCAR’s customary long ovals and banked turns.
Gordon, ranked ninth in the Sprint Cup driver standings, is NASCAR’s all-time leader in road course wins with nine – five of them at Infineon.
Oddsmakers at Bodog have Gordon as a 9-2 favorite to win the Toyota SaveMart 350, followed by 2007 winner Juan Pablo Montoya at 6-1 odds.
Gordon, who with 1876 points is 337 behind Sprint Cup standings leader Kyle Busch, last won at Infineon in 2006 and won three straight from 1998 to 2000. In 15 starts, Gordon has five poles, five wins and 11 top-10s.
Montoya, the former CART champion and Formula One who left open-wheel racing and switched to NASCAR for Chip Ganassi racing last season, won last year’s race from the 32nd starting position. It was only his 17th start as a Sprint Cup driver.
Gordon is solidly in a “Chase for the Championship” position in the standings, which consists of the top 12 drivers, but that’s not the case for Montoya. He’s struggled in 2008 and is 22nd in points, 276 points out of the final "Chase" position currently held by Clint Bowyer.
The Toyota SaveMart 350 starts at 3:30 pm ET on Sunday and can be seen on TNT.
